When it comes to song titles, you don’t get much more on-the-nose than Vile’s instrumental standout, “Relentless Beating.” The mid-album track — and, indeed, the entirety of Cannibal Corpse’s fifth full-length release — doles out extreme brutality through every jackhammered snare and buzz-saw riff. The rest of the album, meanwhile, finds then newly-instated vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher putting on a frighteningly fierce, all-consuming performances for hyper-violent freak-outs liked “Devoured by Vermin” and “Perverse Suffering.” An especially extreme outing among the death-metal legends’ iconically heavy catalogue, Vile remains an expertly vulgar affair.
