A legendary title that has circulated among fans for decades, “Metal Up Your Ass” is a cult classic by Metallica, originally intended to be the title of “Kill ‘Em All.” Although never officially released under that name, it has become a symbol of the band’s raw, early sound.

Metallica’s “No Life ‘Til Leather & Megaforce Demo,” released by Iron Glove, compiles the band’s early recordings that laid the foundation for their later breakthrough. This release features well-known tracks from demos originally distributed on cassette and documents the band’s transition from DIY cassette-swapping to professional studio work.

Musically, the album showcases the raw, early thrash metal that would later become a classic on their debut album, “Kill ‘Em All.” Songs like “Hit the Lights,” “The Mechanix,” and “Seek & Destroy” appear here in their original versions, offering insights into song structures that were not yet fully developed. The original recordings of No Life ‘Til Leather were made in 1982!!!

The lineup and circumstances under which these recordings were made are particularly noteworthy: on early demos, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich were joined by Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney, while later Megaforce sessions featured Cliff Burton, marking a further stage in the band’s history.

Bringing both demos together on one album makes this release a historical cross-section of Metallica’s formative years.
